If you’re visiting Japan and are looking for entertainment during your stay, “JAPAN THEATER「SEIMEI」” (referred to hereafter as “SEIMEI”) is a must-see. Following a successful run in Osaka, this spectacular stage production is coming to THEATER MILANO-Za in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The show seamlessly blends traditional kabuki artistry with modern music, choreography, and dynamic stage effects, creating a unique and highly entertaining performance unlike any other.
Starring Ichikawa Danjūrō XIII Hakuen, one of Japan’s top kabuki actors, and Toa Shimasaki (from the idol group Lil Kansai), known for his standout stage and film work, “SEIMEI” brings this unique mix to life with real star power.
A tale of myth and betrayal
Set in Japan’s Heian period (794-1185), “SEIMEI” follows Abe no Seimei, a legendary onmyōji (master of divination and spiritual protection). When a prophecy warns of chaos, Seimei calls upon the Four Divine Beasts—Suzaku, Seiryū, Byakko, and Genbu—to protect the capital. But Suzaku, played by Shimasaki, betrays him, siding with dark forces and plunging the city into turmoil.
Can Seimei uncover the truth and restore order, or will he face the ultimate confrontation as tensions rise?

“SEIMEI” draws you in with its striking visuals, detailed sets, and thrilling supernatural battles paired with acrobatic dance. Sword fights and mystical showdowns come alive in bold, dramatic moments, lifted by powerful lighting and music. By weaving together classic and modern touches, it gives this legendary tale a fresh, exciting edge.
A powerhouse creative team
Directed by Hiroi Ōji, known for his work on the anime Sakura Wars as well as numerous video games, the production features a musical score by SUGIZO (“Luna Sea” and “X Japan”), blending contemporary and traditional elements. Kento Mori, an internationally acclaimed dancer, choreographs movement that enhances the performance’s fusion of styles, while Chōtatsurō Imafuji provides the traditional Japanese music, ensuring an authentic connection to the story’s historical roots. With a script by Toyoshige Imai, “SEIMEI” delivers a bold retelling of an ancient legend.

In their own words: The creative vision
This exciting collaboration has created a show that bridges cultural boundaries. Ichikawa Danjūrō XIII Hakuen invites international visitors to witness “the moment when something new is born” during their journey to Japan. The renowned actor emphasizes that while traditional kabuki in the Kabuki-za Theater (Ginza, Tokyo) has its place, this production held in Tokyo’s Kabukichō area showcases “a new, evolving culture” that bridges past and present.
Shimasaki, whose portrayal of the rebellious Suzaku forms a central conflict in the narrative, notes that through the kabuki actors’ kata (traditional forms), “the timeless Japanese spirit can be seen in (their) movements,” offering international visitors an authentic glimpse into Japan’s classical arts.
Composer SUGIZO, who crafted the score to tie this artistic blend together, says the production was “built from the start as a mixed media project,” blending “rock, ambient, and club music” with traditional sounds. It creates a theater experience that breaks free of the usual limits, drawing in and exciting audiences from all backgrounds.
