Soup Curry Kamui Akiba Shinkamui is permanently closed.
In Akihabara, a hub for Japanese subculture like idols, anime, and games, you’ll find unique eateries among the area’s many shops for enthusiasts.
One such restaurant is “Soup Curry Kamui Akiba Shinkamui” (hereafter referred to as “Shinkamui”), a specialty shop focusing on soup curry.
Soup curry originated in Hokkaido and is known for its large ingredients and a thin, flavorful curry.
Shinkamui offers authentic soup curry and has gained popularity, even being featured on Japanese television programs in the past.
The restaurant provides the perfect atmosphere for experiencing the culture of Akihabara, and you can enjoy menu items that are collaborations with idols, VTubers, and games.
A soup curry with special emphasis on tender meat
The signature dish at Shinkamui is their “Chicken Vegetable Curry,” topped with tender chicken and plenty of vegetables.
“チキン野菜カレー(ライス付き),” Chicken Vegetable Curry (with rice) 1,210 JPY (tax included)
The chicken, pressure-cooked to perfection, is so tender that it easily falls apart. The spiciness of the curry roux, which gently spreads in your mouth, is attributed to a secret blend of spices.
You can choose the level of spiciness for any dish on a scale from 1 to 10, and during the visit, we went for a moderate 3. The spiciness has a gentle, lingering kick, thanks to the spice blend used in the curry.
The large, chunky veggies, a distinctive feature of soup curry, are prepared using different cooking methods depending on the type.
Eggplants and bell peppers are deep-fried. Carrots and broccoli are boiled and then cooked, simmering together with the soup at the end to blend the flavors.
The soup curry at the restaurant offers a delightful variety of textures in its ingredients, and the more you chew, the more the flavors spread.
Try piling a generous amount of ingredients on top of the accompanying rice and really savor the richness!
Cheese as a topping adds a whole new flavor!
The “Camembert Pork Curry” is also highly recommended as the cheese mellows out the spiciness of the curry roux.
The ingredients include pork chunks, carrots, bell peppers, and two types of cheese.
The pork chunks are pressure-cooked as well, resulting in a tender and melt-in-your-mouth texture.
“カマンベールポークカレー,” Camembert Pork Curry 1,320 JPY (tax included)
Two types of cheese, mixed cheese and Camembert, are used in this dish, providing a broad range of flavors.
The experience of the flavors spreading and melting in your mouth is sure to have you hooked!
Shinkamui’s interior is decorated with panels adorned with cute characters inside the restaurant.
Posters and decorations throughout the space exude the essence of Akihabara.
