Shimbashi is a fascinating Tokyo neighborhood where towering office buildings stand alongside down-to-earth eateries. One of the area’s signature sights is the crowds of office workers gathering each night to unwind after work.
Connected directly to Shimbashi Station via an underground passage, Shimbashi Ekimae Building was built in 1966 and still retains its nostalgic, retro atmosphere.
From the basement first floor to the second floor above ground, an array of distinctive restaurants, small eateries, and bars line the building.
One standout shop in the building is “Butaya Toriyama,” located on the first floor. Specializing in pork dishes, this casual eatery serves hearty teishoku (set meals) centered around their signature pork steak, as well as affordable drinks and snacks in the evening.

Butaya Toriyama is a new concept store from the popular chain “Mallory Pork Steak,” which specializes in thick-cut pork steaks and operates nationwide. In Tokyo, besides Shimbashi, they also have a location in Jiyugaoka.
The signature pork steak here actually originated as a staff meal at Mallory Pork Steak. When the team refined the seasoning to better pair with rice, it turned out so delicious they decided to put it on the menu at Butaya Toriyama. It quickly became the restaurant’s signature dish.

Thick-cut steak made with rare brand pork “TOKYO X”
Mallory Pork Steak’s culinary concept is serving “cartoonishly huge chunks of pork.”
They use carefully selected pork shoulder loin and perform vacuum low-temperature cooking at around 66°C (158° F) for about 4 hours, achieving an ultra-thick yet tender and juicy texture.
Butaya Toriyama offers the same high-quality pork steak, but served as a teishoku with rice and miso soup. The rice is a premium Yamagata Prefecture-grown variety selected by a five-star rice master.

Their standard “Pork Teishoku” features a Canadian barley-finished Sangenton pork, which earned a three-star rating from the International Taste Institute. But for something truly special, try the “TOKYO X Pork Teishoku” (limited to 15 meals per day).
TOKYO X is an ultra-premium breed raised by a small number of certified farmers in Japan.
At Butaya Toriyama, they generously use 300 g (about 10.5oz) of TOKYO X. After cutting it ultra-thick and pre-cooking it thoroughly with low-temperature cooking, they sear the surface to aromatic perfection for each order.

The Pork Teishoku comes in three seasoning varieties. The restaurant’s most popular is “Tonteki,” which uses a base of Worcestershire sauce and ketchup.
There’s also “Ginger-yaki” combining soy sauce with grated onion and aromatic ginger, and “Miso-yaki,” which is based on rich red miso. You can choose according to your preference.
For those who can’t decide which seasoning to choose, the “Aimori Teishoku Sanshoku” (“Mixed Set Meal – Three Kinds”), which lets you taste all seasonings at once, is also recommended.

The sizzling Tonteki is served on a hot plate and releases an irresistible aroma as the special sauce is poured over it.
That irresistible sizzle gets your appetite going—and you can’t help but feel a little thrill.

The glossy, golden-brown meat is so hefty, it’s a challenge to lift with chopsticks.
With the first bite, you’re met with a crisp exterior and a surprisingly tender center. The fine meat fibers release rich juices and the sweetness of high-quality fat, leaving you wide-eyed in delight.
The refined aroma is another highlight. Garlic confit and chips on the side add depth of flavor, and when combined with the rich sauce, it’s impossible to stop eating.

The flavor-packed “Pork Karaage Teishoku” is also a big hit!
Butaya Toriyama’s set meals aren’t limited to just the Pork Teishoku.
Another hit is the “Pork Karaage Teishoku,” which replaces the usual chicken with pork.

The “Butakara” in the dish’s Japanese name refers to a pork version of chicken karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken).
At Butaya Toriyama, they use pork shoulder.
The meat is tenderized by pounding and flattening it, then coated in a crispy breading and deep-fried to create a satisfyingly crunchy texture.

It’s flavored with garlic soy sauce, so it’s rich when eaten as-is, but you can also enjoy flavor variations by dipping it in the accompanying mayonnaise or sweet and sour sauce made with black vinegar.
Other set meals include the “Tonjiru Teishoku” featuring tonjiru (pork bone-based miso soup with pork), “Liver and Garlic Chives Stir-Fry Teishoku” with pork liver prepared to remove any gamey flavor, stir-fried with vegetables (a Japanese-Chinese standard), and “Stir-Fried Pork and Vegetables Teishoku” packed with 350 g (about 12.3 oz) of flavorfully stir-fried vegetables and meat—a rich variety of pork-based menus.
At peak lunchtime around noon, it’s common to see businesspeople lining up outside.

Try your luck with the reasonable and unique “Senbero Set!”
Butaya Toriyama is also a fun, casual izakaya-style spot.
The Umami bites editorial team recommends the “Senbero Set” available from 3:00 PM.
“Senbero” is a slang term that combines sen-en (1,000 JPY) and bero-bero (a slang word for being drunk), referring to places where you can enjoy drinks and snacks at prices low enough to get tipsy for just 1,000 JPY.
Butaya Toriyama’s Senbero Set incorporates the style of chinchirorin, a traditional Japanese dice game.
When you order the 1,100 yen set, you’ll receive three coins that can be exchanged for drinks or snacks (small dishes), along with a small appetizer.
At Butaya Toriyama, drinks start at just 550 yen. Since even the cheapest drink can be traded for a single coin, you’re already getting a great deal.

Here’s how chinchirorin works: First, you simultaneously roll three dice in the bowl.
The number of additional coins you receive is determined by the results—three coins if all dice show the same number, two coins if you roll 4-5-6, and one coin for one pair.
If the three numbers are all different or if dice fly out of the bowl, you receive no additional coins.
There are over 20 types of snacks you can exchange with coins, including “Fried Mussels” (1 coin exchange, normally 440 JPY), “Shrimp Fritters” (2 coin exchange, normally 660 JPY), and “Tender Chicken Liver” (2 coin exchange, normally 660 JPY)—quite a variety.

The drink menu includes a wide variety, from beer to chū-hai (a mixed alcoholic drink usually made with shōchū), and occasionally features rare and hard-to-find Japanese sake. Be sure to check the sake section as well.

Example of the Senbero Set
At affordable places like those known for senbero options, the local way to enjoy is by not lingering too long at one spot—quickly eating and drinking before hopping between bars to savor different dishes and atmospheres along with your drinks.
For this reason, Butaya Toriyama may impose a time limit of 30 to 45 minutes for Senbero Set orders during busy periods.
At Butaya Toriyama, you can experience Japanese food culture not only through their hearty set meals but also by enjoying drinks and snacks just like the locals do.
