Asakusa, while being one of Tokyo’s premier tourist destinations, is also a gourmet area packed with long-established, famous restaurants.
Established in 1951, “Yoshikami” is a name that invariably comes up when discussing Asakusa’s dining scene. Yoshikami is a restaurant that specializes in yōshoku (Western-inspired Japanese cuisine) that evolved uniquely after international dishes were introduced to Japan.
Signature dishes of Asakusa’s famous yoshoku restaurant: Yoshikami
Right as you enter the restaurant, you’ll be immediately struck by the open kitchen, bustling with cooking energy. Preparing dishes in front of customers is both a signature characteristic and point of pride at Yoshikami.
Counter seats provide an up-close view of the cooking process
The time spent waiting, while listening to the enticing sounds of cooking and admiring the chefs’ skilled movements with their frying pans, is one of the highlights of the open kitchen experience.
About 10 chefs are constantly working diligently, finishing dishes with impressive speed.
While anticipation builds, out comes the “Beef Stew” loaded with generous chunks of beef. Among the many superb dishes at Yoshikami, the Beef Stew is particularly popular, and one of the most-ordered dishes on the menu.

The key to its flavor is the restaurant’s pride and joy, their famous demi-glace sauce, which has been passed down since Yoshikami’s founding. Made with multiple aromatic vegetables, the demi-glace sauce has a subtle sweetness and deep richness that lingers.
The beef, which becomes infused with the demi-glace sauce, is also exquisite. After being simmered with the sauce for 2 to 3 hours and then chilled, the beef is reheated before serving, making it so tender that it can easily be broken apart with a spoon.
The large cuts really allow you to savor the umami of the beef.
The classic omurice is also exceptional!
As Yoshikami is a yoshoku restaurant, their omurice (omelet rice) is naturally a must-order.

Yoshikami’s omurice features ketchup-seasoned rice wrapped in a well-cooked thin omelet.
The rice, stir-fried over high heat, is served so piping hot that steam rises when scooped with a spoon!
The ketchup sauce added as a finishing touch is on the tart side, balancing the sweetness of the rice and egg.
With such a generous portion size, the price of 1,500 JPY is a surprising bargain!
Hamburger steak overflowing with meaty juices!
Everything on the menu at Yoshikami is delicious. Another must-order dish is their “Hamburger Steak.” Even if you’re already full, it might just be too tempting not to order!

The dish is prepared in two stages: first seared in a frying pan, then heated in the oven. Searing locks in the meat juices and umami, while oven heating ensures a tender, fluffy texture.
The juiciness is evident the moment you slice into the steak, with flavorful meaty juices flowing from the cut. With each bite, those sweet juices seep out, offering a luxurious taste!
Made with ground beef, pork, and chopped onions
The generous serving of demi-glace sauce on top adds to the indulgence. Cut the steak into bite-size pieces, coat them thoroughly with the sauce, and enjoy! This deeply rich sauce really brings out the umami of the steak.
Yoshikami offers a menu of dishes that pair wonderfully with alcohol. While the hamburger steak naturally goes well with just rice or bread, it’s highly recommended to enjoy it with wine or beer.
Yoshikami receives many celebrity diners
Yoshikami has been featured countless times in magazines and on TV, making it a popular spot. Many celebrities have visited, and the restaurant’s walls are covered with autographed boards, showcasing its fame.
Yoshikami’s interior
The reason for its popularity is undoubtedly the flavor, but Hiroaki Azuma, the third-generation owner, humbly states that Yoshikami doesn’t use special ingredients or cooking methods.
He suggests there’s a different reason why their dishes have been beloved by many for so long.
“We simply prepare each dish with care.”
This meticulous attention to detail is evident in every dish served at Yoshikami!
