Oden is a traditional Japanese dish in which ingredients like daikon radish, fish cakes such as chikuwa and kamaboko, and more are simmered slowly in a large pot.
Across Japan, you’ll find many establishments where you can enjoy oden paired with alcohol. The type of broth used and the selection of ingredients—called oden-dane—vary widely, giving each shop a distinct character.
Among those, “Gyuudashi Odensakaba COZAKURA” (hereafter referred to as “COZAKURA”) in Shibuya stands out for its rare use of beef broth in its oden.

Located a short walk through Center Gai street from Shibuya Station, COZAKURA sits in an area surrounded by street fashion shops and record stores.
The interior features table seating with counter seats near the kitchen.
The stylish interior was originally a music bar, and the ceiling is adorned with decorative masu (traditional wooden Japanese sake cups), giving it a chic, modern vibe.

Exquisite oden simmered in carefully prepared beef broth
COZAKURA’s biggest feature is its beef-based dashi, which is used to simmer the oden.
While most oden broth is typically made from bonito flakes, mackerel flakes, and kombu (kelp), COZAKURA’s oden uses beef broth made from domestic wagyu beef.
The beef broth is carefully prepared over three days to eliminate any gaminess. Various oden ingredients are simmered in this rich base, with their umami soaking into the broth and further deepening its flavor.
This process creates the distinctive flavor profile of COZAKURA’s oden.

(from top left) “さつまあげ,” Satsumaage (fried fish cake) 275 JPY (tax included), “はんぺん,” Hanpen (soft fluffy white fish cake) 330 JPY (tax included), “大大根,” Giant Daikon 550 JPY (tax included), “大きなちくわ,” Giant Chikuwa (tube-shaped fish cake) 395 JPY (tax included)
COZAKURA’s oden pieces are generously sized, as indicated by the dai (“large or “giant”) in the names of their dishes.
One of the most popular items is the “Giant Daikon,” a whole, cylindrical chunk of daikon radish simmered until it’s tender enough to pull apart with chopsticks, and soaked through with flavorful oden broth.
Another item, the “Giant Chikuwa,” measures 25 cm (nearly 10 inches) in length, offering plenty of bite.

(from top left) “がんも,” Ganmo (tofu fritter) 241 JPY (tax included), “大大根,” Giant Daikon 550 JPY (tax included), “ハンバーグ,” Hamburger Steak 418 JPY (tax included), “こんにゃく,” Konnyaku (firm jelly made from konjac yam) 275 JPY (tax included), “牛すじ,” Beef Tendon 418 JPY (tax included), “大きなシューマイ,” Giant Shumai (giant Chinese-style steamed dumplings) 375 JPY (tax included)
COZAKURA’s beef broth oden pairs exceptionally well with meat dishes and unique oden ingredients.
Dishes like the “Hamburger Steak,” and “Giant Shumai,” where you can especially taste the juiciness of the meat, or the tender, slow-simmered “Beef Tendon,” take on a whole new life when paired with the fragrant oden broth infused with the rich flavor of beef.
Enjoy à la carte dishes and a wide selection of drinks!

“サーモンレアカツ,” Rare Salmon Katsu 1,650 JPY (tax included)
COZAKURA offers not only oden but also an extensive selection of individual dishes.
The “Rare Salmon Katsu” features fresh salmon coated and fried to achieve a crispy exterior and rare interior, served with grated ponzu citrus sauce.

“トロタク生春巻,” Toro-Taku Spring Roll 792 JPY (tax included)
Toro-taku, combining negitoro (scraped tuna belly) with takuan (pickled daikon radish), is a favorite at sushi restaurants.
At COZAKURA, the toro-taku is wrapped not in the usual nori seaweed, but in rice paper to create fresh spring rolls.
True to spring roll style, vegetables are also included, and the crunchy texture of the takuan provides a delightful accent.

“鴨の低温ロースト,” Slow-Roasted Duck 2,480 JPY (tax included)
The “Slow-Roasted Duck” is tender, juicy duck slowly roasted at a low temperature and served with a balsamic vinegar sauce—perfectly paired with a drink.

COZAKURA also puts considerable effort into their craft beer selection.

These beers are handpicked from regional breweries across Japan, including rare finds not easily available elsewhere. With frequent menu changes, you’re likely to discover something new each visit.
The menu includes detailed tasting notes and alcohol content, so why not try a flavor you’ve never had before?

COZAKURA also boasts a solid sake lineup, including rare selections from well-known breweries that are difficult to find on the market.
As with the craft beer, these rotate often—making each encounter a one-of-a-kind experience.
COZAKURA presents an enjoyable contrast. Though the atmosphere is modern and trendy, the oden and drinks offer authentic, traditional flavors.
This is the perfect recommendation for when you want to enjoy Shibuya’s nightlife.
