Rice, a variety of side dishes, and miso soup—together they form teishoku, a set meal style that is a proud part of Japanese food culture.
In recent years, thanks in part to exposure to it via anime, teishoku has been gaining popularity among international visitors. The chance to taste a little bit of everything has captured the hearts of food lovers worldwide.

At Okachimachi Komachi Shokudo, you can customize your own teishoku
Normally, a teishoku set comes with a fixed menu. But at “Okachimachi Komachi Shokudo,” you can mix and match your favorite dishes to create your own perfect set.
The restaurant is located within walking distance of Ueno, making it a convenient stop between sightseeing at Ueno Zoo, the museums of Ueno Park, or the bustling Ameya-Yokocho (Ameyoko) shopping street.
Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it’s especially popular with travelers arriving on early-morning flights or stopping by before late-night departures.

From grilled and simmered fish to sashimi, fried items, stir-fries, stewed dishes, and simple vegetable sides, the lineup is packed with Japanese home-cooking classics—just looking at them is half the fun.
Prices range from around 80 to 600 JPY per dish, making it easy on the wallet and perfect for everyday use.

Staff will warm up your chosen dishes for you
Once you’re done choosing, take your tray to the counter. Hot dishes are warmed up by the staff before being served.
Thanks to cooking methods designed to keep food tasty even when cooled and strict freshness control, you can’t go wrong no matter which dish you pick.

Counter for ordering rice and miso soup
Rice and miso soup are ordered separately at the counter. You can choose between Akita Komachi, a premium brand of rice delivered fresh from Akita every day, or a wholesome multigrain blend made with 15 different grains.
For miso soup, there are two options: the classic version for those who like to keep it simple, or a hearty pork miso soup packed with ingredients for those who want something more filling.
A wide variety of dressings and sauces are also available for salads and side dishes, and you’re free to season things to your liking. Water and tea are self-service, so feel free to help yourself.

Enjoy Japan’s Traditional “Ichijū-Sansai” Style
In Japanese home cooking, there is a traditional meal style called ichijū-sansai, or “one soup, three dishes.”
It consists of one soup such as miso soup, one main dish rich in protein like meat or fish, and two vegetable-based side dishes, all paired with rice. This golden rule of Japanese dining is known for its excellent nutritional balance.
To see how it works, we tried putting together our own custom ichiju-sansai meal here.

(Top left) Yuzu Mozuku 140 JPY (tax included) (Top center) Stamina Tuna 430 JPY (tax included) (Top right) Bacon Egg Potato Salad 240 JPY (tax included) (Bottom left) Pork Soup 190 JPY (tax included) (Bottom center) Chicken and Garlic Sprouts with Butter and Soy Sauce 420 JPY (tax included) (Bottom right) Rice (medium) 190 JPY (tax included)
For the main dish, we chose the “Chicken and Garlic Sprouts with Butter and Soy Sauce.” For the soup, we went with the hearty “Pork Soup.” The ichiju-sansai style calls for two side dishes, but it’s very common to add more for an even more balanced and substantial meal. With that in mind, we selected three delicious sides: the hearty “Bacon Egg Potato Salad,” the “Stamina Tuna,” which combines tuna sashimi with okra, natto, and grated yam, and to round things out, “Yuzu Mozuku,” a refreshing seaweed dish with a citrusy yuzu accent, perfect for an extra boost of minerals.
One of the best parts of dining here is being able to create your own balance of dishes—coming up with the combinations is half the fun.
There’s no set order to eat, but for a more health-conscious approach, try starting with the miso soup to warm your stomach, then move on to vegetables, the main dish, and finally rice.
On the table, you’ll also find soy sauce, tonkatsu sauce, shichimi spice, sesame salt, and other condiments to change up the flavors—ensuring you’ll never get bored, right down to the last bite.

Vegan and vegetarian-friendly teishoku
The biggest selling point of Okachimachi Komachi Shokudo is the freedom to choose exactly what you like, as much as you like.
You can even select two main dishes—like “Salted Mackerel,” and rich, melt-in-your-mouth “Tuna Sashimi” (which features ōtoro, extra fatty tuna) —without any problem.

(Top) “マグロ造り,” Tuna Sashimi 540 JPY (tax included) (Bottom) “塩鯖,” Salted Mackerel 420 JPY (tax included)
For the side dishes, we chose a mini rolled omelet and spinach ohitashi (blanched spinach seasoned with soy sauce). The meal was rounded out with multigrain rice and hearty pork soup.
For those who prefer to avoid meat or fish, it’s easy to build a vegetable-based set, making it a great option for vegetarians and even vegans.
If you still feel like something’s missing, you can always add more dishes later. Sampling a little bit of whatever catches your eye is also highly recommended.
