This retro-style cafe, featuring heavy wooden furniture and chairs upholstered in leather and velour, offers guests a place to enjoy drinks like coffee alongside light meals such as sandwiches and pasta.

Unaffected by trends and dedicated to preserving a nostalgic atmosphere, Japanese cafes like this have long been loved by many.

Located near Higashi-Ginza Station, “Kissa You” is a long-established cafe where you can enjoy classic yōshoku (Western-inspired Japanese cuisine) in a space that feels like a quiet pocket amid the bustle of the city.

Interior of Kissa You in Ginza

Kissa You was established in 1970 with the idea of being a place “just for you.”

Initially, the cafe served only sandwiches and coffee, but around the year 2000, it began offering dishes such as omurice (omelette rice) and spaghetti Neapolitan (a spaghetti dish made with a ketchup-based sauce).

The cafe is located near the Kabukiza Theatre, and has long been a favorite among kabuki actors. It remains popular with theatergoers and those involved in performances.

In recent years, many international travelers have also discovered Kissa You, making it popular with people of all generations and nationalities.

One-of-a-kind soft and fluffy “Omelette rice”

The one dish you absolutely have to mention when talking about Kissa You is their ever-popular “Omelette rice.”

Omurice, which originated in Japan, typically consists of rice stir-fried with chicken, vegetables, and ketchup, wrapped in a thinly cooked egg. However, Kissa You serves it in a unique style with a cloud-like fluffy omelet placed on top of ketchup fried rice.

The omelet is so soft that it trembles just by lifting the plate.

This texture is created by whisking beaten eggs and cooking them all at once with refined skill.

Two types of heavy cream with different fat contents are mixed into the eggs, along with margarine instead of butter, creating a flavor that’s rich but not too heavy.

The thinly spread eggs are rolled into a beautiful oval, then placed on ketchup rice mixed with bacon and onions, seasoned with a hint of black pepper to finish the dish.

The moment you take a bite, the omelet melts in your mouth—it’s like a “drinkable omurice”!

The light-tasting ketchup rice with a refreshing aftertaste perfectly combines with the mildly tangy tomato ketchup made from domestic tomatoes layered on top of the omurice, creating a gentle flavor with a distinct egg umami.

A timeless classic passed down for over 50 years: the “Omelette sandwich”

Among the traditional sandwiches served since Kissa You’s founding, the most popular is the “Omelette sandwich.”

This sandwich generously uses two eggs to create a fluffy omelet, which is placed between slices of bread sourced daily from a famous bakery in Ginza.

The bread is cut to order, and the only seasonings used are their subtly tangy homemade mayonnaise and margarine, allowing the natural sweetness of the bread and richness of the eggs to shine.

If you prefer a bit more salt, feel free to use the salt provided on the side.

Kissa You’s signature dishes—including the omurice—are designed to be quickly eaten and easy on the stomach, making them ideal for kabuki actors during rehearsals or between performances. These well-thought-out dishes have stood the test of time.

Another popular dish on the menu is the “Spaghetti Neapolitan,” a staple at classic Japanese coffee shops.

This uniquely Japanese pasta dish features thick spaghetti stir-fried with onion and bacon in a ketchup-based sauce.

While Spaghetti Neapolitan is typically known for its rich, sweet ketchup flavor, Kissa You uses a homemade tomato sauce with a refreshing tang for a lighter taste.

Generously cut bacon, onions, and mushrooms make it satisfyingly hearty.

A good drink to pair with the Spaghetti Neapolitan is the “Melon Soda,” which is a signature beverage at classic Japanese coffee shops.

The candy-like melon flavor becomes even more playful when paired with a scoop of creamy ice cream. As the ice cream melts into the drink, you can enjoy the shifting flavors with each sip.

A hearty hamburg steak and specialty coffee

If you’re looking for a filling meal, try the “Hamburg steak,” available in limited quantity. The juicy flavor, rich with the umami of the meat, pairs perfectly with the deep, savory demi-glace sauce.

Rice can be added for 200 JPY (tax included), or you can order the Hamburg steak on its own for 1,500 JPY (tax included).

Many travelers enjoy ordering it alongside the Omelette rice.

Kissa You also takes a particular approach to crafting their coffee.

Their original blend coffee, passed down since the establishment’s founding, is dark roasted with a deep richness, served in a unique style with unsweetened whipped cream.

If you scoop the whipped cream with a spoon and let it float on the coffee without stirring, you can enjoy the contrast of hot and cold.

Their iced coffee and café au lait come pre-sweetened, another of the café’s unique touches.

Menus are also available in English, making the cafe easy to navigate for international visitors.

Please note that Kissa You requires one drink order per person. Even if you order food, a drink is required, except in the case of ordering a standalone Hamburg steak.

Though it’s usually bustling with visitors from Japan and abroad, the cafe tends to be less crowded after 2:00 PM.

Why not take a break from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a calming space with carefully crafted dishes at one of Ginza’s most iconic cafes?
